Bertha Dow is an antagonist in The Baby-Sitters Club and Friends Forever books.
Biography[]
In Mary Anne and the Library Mystery, she is a protestor trying to get books banned at the Stoneybrook Public Library. She gave Mary Anne Spier and Kristy Thomas pamphlets about her cause. Mary Anne notes that she can talk for fifteen minutes solid. Bertha admits to have burned books as part of public demonstration in North Carolina to draw attention to her cause. Several people were arrested and the publicity was terrible, so she never did it again.
In Kristy Power! she attempts to get Ted Morley fired for passing out a list of recommended books that she deemed offensive. Her daughter, Merrie Dow, defended Ted and stood by her classmates embarrassing Bertha. It's mentioned she also runs a parents group called Parents for Decency which embarrasses Merrie.
