De Babysittersclub

The Baby-Sitters Club books were translated into Dutch starting in 1989, three years after The Baby-Sitters Club started and a year after the Super Specials and Little Sister series started. The title was translated as De Babysittersclub, and the series used the US cover art with a different logo design (which matches the design used for the Belgium French translation).

Books 1-66 were released, as well as, Books 1-12 of the Mysteries, Books 1-4 of the Super Specials, Books 1-8 of the Little Sister series, Books 1-2 of the Readers' Request, Books 1-4 of the Graphic Novels, Books 1-2 of the Little Sister Graphic Novels, and Books 1-4 of the 2020s Reprints.

Differences between the US and Dutch books[]

In the original 1990s translations, character and place names were changed throughout the books. Stoneybrook is renamed Steendam, New York has been changed to Amsterdam, California is Suriname, and Oakley is Brussels.

Name Differences[]

In the graphic novels and 2020s reprint of the book series, original American names and locations are used.

Trivia[]

  • The Dutch books, Stacey moved to Stoneybrook from Amsterdam, Dawn from Suriname, and Jessi from Belgium. Dawn being from Suriname led to the Disneyland chapter being removed from the translation of book 23, Dawn on the Coast. It also led to some contrived translation in the California Girls super special.
  • Book 65 and 66 were released in reversed order to the original run in English.
  • Super specials 1, 2, 4, and 5 were translated to Dutch: it is not known why book 3 was skipped.
  • The 4 translated BSC graphic novel stories were first published as a weekly series in a girls' magazine, TINA, then released as full graphic novels. They were colored in for the magazine and as a result released in color, unlike the original American print. This means the colors in the Dutch graphic novels differ from the later released colored version of the graphic novels in the USA.
  • The 2020s re-releases, following the Netflix series, is the first time the books were released in Dutch since the original run. American names and locations are kept, and book titles are altered slightly. Other than that, the translations are identical to the original translations of the 1990s.
