[[Karen Brewer|Karen]] wants to play outside. [[Lisa Engle|Mommy]] tells her not to go in the treehouse. It is too dangerous. But Karen climbs up anyway. Then she slips and falls.

Karen is rushed to the hospital. She has to have an operation. It is going to be scary. But Karen is going to be brave.

==Summary==
It is the end of winter vacation, and [[Karen Brewer|Karen]] and [[Nancy Dawes|Nancy]] are playing in the snow. After a snowball fight, they have a secret snowball meeting and talk about the things they liked doing best. Nancy says she liked building snowpeople and getting presents for Hanukkah, and Karen says she liked sledding and watching her favorite figure skater, [[Irina Kozlova]], on television. [[Lisa Engle|Mrs. Engle]] calls [[Andrew Brewer|Andrew]] and Karen in and makes them some hot chocolate. 

The next day at school, [[Ms. Colman]] tells her students to think of people they admire. [[Sara Ford|Sara]] raises her hand and says she admires Harriet Tubman. Ms. Colman says that is a very good choice, but she wants the students to think of someone who is alive'' ''so they can write letters to him or her. Then the bell rings for recess''.''

After recess, the secretary from [[Mrs. Titus|Mrs. Titus']] office hands Ms. Colman a notice. The school is closing early due to weather conditions, and the kids are sent home before the roads get too slippery. When Karen gets home, she decides to play in the backyard. Her mother lets her play outside for a few minutes, but not in the treehouse because it's too dangerous. Outside, Karen remembers that Andrew left her magic wand in the treehouse, so she climbs up the treehouse to get it. She slips and falls on a tree stump, rupturing her spleen. 

Mrs. Engle calls Dr. Dellenkamp and tells her what had happened to her daughter. Then she calls Mrs. Dawes and asks if it's okay for Andrew to stay at her house. Finally, she calls [[Seth Engle|Mr. Engle]] at work and asks him to meet her and Karen at the hospital as soon as he can. Then she and Karen drive to the hospital.
