The Baby-Sitters Club Wiki

In addition to the US, The Baby-Sitters Club was also popular in Canada, but in the French-speaking province of Quebec, the series is called Les Baby-sitters. It was published in French by translator Héritage Jeunesse between 1990 and 1996; four years after The Baby-Sitters Club books started, and two years after the Super Specials and Little Sister Series started.

Other French Translations[]

There are also many other French translations of The Baby-Sitters Club not to be confused with French readers of this series. In France, the French translation was called Le Club des Baby-Sitters and was published by Gallimard Jeunesse (But there was a few name changes and the books go up to #53). In Belgium the French translation had the same name but was published by Chatecler and the books go up to #22 and there are different character names.

The 1990 TV show and the movie were released in Canada as well, but the character names were not used, only the american ones.

The Graphic novels, 2020 TV show, and the reprints were released too, but the character names were not used too, only the France versions.

Front Cover Example[]

The picture is an example of Kristy's Great Idea or "Christine a une idée géniale" in french, but it says 'Les Baby-Sitters' and the cover art is the same as the US editions, but the logo is round-shaped and the title is above the logo. Below it, it says: "Four goalkeepers found their club". A notice also says: "Contest, Everybody Win!" Which means there is a contest going on. There is also a Les Baby-Sitters Fan Club as well.

Minor Changes[]

Minor changes to the story were made for the Canadian French publication. For example, the girls live in the fictional town of Nouville, Quebec, rather than Stoneybrook, Connecticut. The girls' names were also changed to French names (ex: Christine Thomas for Kristy). Toronto became a stand in for New York, and Hull for California. (But Dawn was born in California first until moving to Hull and to Nouville after her parents' divorce), Oakley wasn't changed, and Louisville is Nouveau-Brunswick (New Brunswick).

Back cover example[]

Avez-vous besoin d'une baby-sitter ? Vite, appelle : Les Baby-Sitters

Sept baby-sitters expérimentées à votre service :

  • Christine Thomas, présidente
  • Claudia Kishi, vice-présidente
  • Anne-Marie Lapierre, secrétaire
  • Sophie Ménard, trésorière
  • Daine Dubreuil, suppléante
  • Marjorie Picard, membre junior
  • Jessica Raymond, membre junior

Christine pense que le Babysitters Club est une excellente idée. Elle et ses amies Claudia, Sophie et Anne-Marie adorent s'occuper des enfants. Travailler ensemble sera plus amusant, sans compter qu’ils gagneront beaucoup d’argent.

Mais les appels imprévus, inhabituels se multiplient et Sophie se comporte d'une manière étrange. Non, les choses ne se passent pas bien pour le Babysitters Club, mais Christine et ses amies sont bien décidées à arranger les choses.

And that is the back cover of Kristy's Great Idea or Christine a une idée géniale.

Books #1-66 of the main series were published, as well as #1-14 of the mystery series, #1-5 of the Super Specials, #1-6 of the Baby-sitters Little Sister series, and one of the Portrait Collection books (Claudia's Book).
