Continuity and Inconsistencies
Continuity
- Mary Anne recalls her and Stacey's job as mothers helpers in Boy-Crazy Stacey on page 4.
- On page 39, Mary Anne mentions when they brought The Record Book to school from Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls.
Inconsistencies
- Kristy says she doesn't like to recommend people who aren't BSC members to clients, but in BSLS #46, she recommends Bart Taylor be the Engles' babysitter (even though she knows that he hasn't babysat much).
- When Logan is at the meeting and Claudia goes downstairs to get soda for everyone, she comes back with glasses, and Mary Anne says Logan "handed me a glass of Diet Coke." How would she know that if it was in a glass and she hadn't tasted it? But it’s possible that Claudia only served diet soda at club meetings because of Stacey’s diabetes.
- On page 18, Dawn's lunch is yogurt with granola mixed in. It's said that she didn't go through the lunch line and brought lunch from home, so the yogurt wouldn't have held. Dawn could’ve had a cold pack in her lunch bag; then the yogurt would’ve been fine.
Ann M. Martin's Dear Reader Letter
Dear Reader,
Logan Likes Mary Anne is not only the first romance in the Baby-sitters Club series, but it introduces Logan Bruno, the first boy member of the BSC. I thought it would be interesting if Mary Anne, the quietest and shiest member, was the first to have a steady boyfriend, so I created Logan. Since most of my relatives are from Louisville, Kentucky, I decided that was the city Logan would move from. It was while I was writing this book that I realized a year had passed in the lives of the BSC characters. Mary Anne was the last of the original club members to turn thirteen, and the series was still going strong. So my editors and I decided that the characters would have to remain this age. Looking back now, I realize this was a good decision. If the girls had continued to get older, they would be college graduates by now! Instead, they’re in middle school forever.
Trivia
- The book had a working title of Mary Anne Goes Steady, as advertised in previous books.
- Stacey and Logan are in the same homeroom. Homerooms are divided up alphabetically.
- The Morgan family (which has four boys) is never mentioned again. It is likely that they call Logan directly instead of the BSC.
- Logan tells Kristy that he knows some boys who might want to be associate members of the club. This is never mentioned again.
- This is the first appearance of the Rodowsky Family and Mr. Ohdner.
- This is the first time the BSC starts the 8th grade.
- On the dedication page this book says "This book is for my old baby-sitters, Maura and Peggy."
- Jobs lined up but never seen include: Mary Anne for Jenny, Dawn for the Pikes, Stacey for the Newtons, Mary Anne for the Newtons, Mary Anne for the Perkins, Mary Anne for the Rodowskys,
- This is the first time Stacey and Claudia eat with the rest of the BSC according to Mary Anne.
- There's an unnamed set of boy twins in the eighth grade who sits with the Shillaber twins.
- Kristy has met a few people her age already in her new neighborhood and labeled them as snobs.
- Mary Anne got her first bra with her dad at the mall.
- School just started and Claudia is already behind in math and English.
- Mary Anne mentions that David Michael had been in her room before on page 41.
- Logan can sit until 10:30 on weekdays and 12:00 on weekends.
- Mary Anne thinks that it's hard to call adults by their first names.
- Charlotte's new friend is Sophie McCann, before that, her best friend was Vanessa Pike
- Claudia found Mary Anne's iconic skirt from this book.
- Dawn and Kristy hang out together in chapter 11, when Kristy babysat her siblings.
- Dawn eats some of the birthday cake.
- Mary Anne is the one that thinks of the concept of associate members and Kristy is the one that gives them the title.
- Starting with this book, every character has aged up one year and remained this age for the remainder of the series. For example all of the BSC is now in the 8th grade and are 13 years old, Charlotte is in the fourth and 9 years old, Jamie is now 5, the Pikes aged a year up, Karen and Andrew become 7 and 5, Myriah and Gabbie become 6 and 3, etc.
- In chapter 3 when Kristy says the club will need to pay for the Xerox paper for their fliers, Stacey says they have a little over fifteen dollars in the treasury. Kristy takes eight dollars for the paper. As club treasurer, Stacey should’ve known how much the paper would cost and she should’ve given Kristy the appropriate amount of money.
- Stacey was feeling shaky and her doctor adjusted her insulin dosage.
