Verna Baker is the wife of Bill Baker, the mother of Alma Baker Spier and Mary Anne Spier's grandmother.

Biography[]

She lives on a farm at lived at Box 127, Old County Road in Maynard, Iowa. She and her husband took care of Mary Anne when Mary Anne was a baby in Mary Anne and the Secret in the Attic.

Mary Anne visits Verna in at the end of Mary Anne and the Secret of the Attic, the trip is outlined in Mary Anne's Book. Mary Anne visits her again in Minnesota at the Mall of America. She meets some of Mary Anne's friends and they have lunch together. Verna gently insuates that Jack Schafer has a little bit of a belly when defending Richard's eating habits.

In Everything Changes, she visits Richard Spier and Mary Anne in Stoneybrook. She gives them some of Alma's old things that she still had since they had lost their mementos of her in the fire.

Trivia[]

  • In Mary Anne's Book, she mentions that she cries easily and that she won ribbons at the county fair for her jams. She and Mary Anne make blackberry jam together.
